During a softball season when final scores of 6-4 were more prevalent than 2-1, hitters had plenty of chances to show that this isn’t just a pitchers’ game anymore.
Every position player on The World-Herald’s All-Nebraska team batted at least .424, and one of the pitchers — Omaha Skutt junior and Nebraska recruit Kaylan Jablonski — hit .654.
The best example of this year’s hitting prowess came in a one-week stretch starting Sept. 29 by Millard South catcher Madi Unzicker, another Husker recruit.
In eight games, Unzicker was 15 for 19 with nine home runs — enabling her to tie the Class A record for career home runs (23). And the junior still has another season to play for the state champion Patriots.
“That was a hitting frenzy like I have never seen in all my years of coaching baseball and softball,” Millard South coach Steve Kerkman said.
What Unzicker did that week was one of many reasons she is the honorary captain of the 2012 All-Nebraska team. She set six school records — .536 batting average, 42 RBIs, 50 runs, 34 walks (many of those intentional), a .664 on-base percentage and 1.143 slugging percentage.
Behind the plate, she picked off seven runners and threw out 13 of 15 attempting to steal. On 160 total defensive chances, she had 144 putouts, 15 assists and one error.
Unzicker is one of five repeat selections on the All-Nebraska team, which consists of six seniors, five juniors and two sophomores.
Papillion-La Vista junior Gina Metzler earned her third first-team honor. She’s on track to become the fourth four-time All-Nebraska selection. Leigh Suhr of Papio, Ashley Eoriatti of Millard West and Bailey Dawson of Lincoln Southeast are the only members of the four-time club.
Jablonski and seniors Nicole Warren of Papillion-La Vista South and Jen Daro of Skutt join Unzicker as two-time selections.
Also on the first team are seniors Taylor Wachholtz of Papillion-La Vista, Kat Woolman of Class B champion Lincoln Pius X, Courtney Schendt of Papillion-La Vista South and Katie Klosterman of Millard West, as well as juniors Lindsey Telecky of Grand Island and Paige Nekola of Papio South and sophomores Jordan Johnson and Vicky Kinney of Millard South.
