St. Albert threw out the script early, and the results spoke for themselves.
The Falcons’ early success pounding the ball up the middle led the coaching staff to abandon the scripted plays with which St. Albert was supposed to start the game. A power running game led the Falcons (10-1) to score on their first five possessions in a 42-7 rout of Van Meter (8-3) in the second round of the Class 1-A playoffs.
“We script our first 20 plays,” St. Albert head coach Kevin Culjat said, “but we got away from it because we were having success running between the tackles.”
Cole Herr, who didn’t play in St. Albert’s first-round win Wednesday against Pella Christian, found the end zone early and often. The Falcon rushing attack finished with 302 yards on 49 carries.
Herr scored short touchdowns on the first three St. Albert possessions, as the Falcons jumped out a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
“The line did a fantastic job opening up holes, and I tried to run hard for them,” said Herr, who rushed for 86 yards and three touchdowns on 10 first-half carries. “They’re getting better game by game, and it shows out there.”
The defense was also running on all cylinders for St. Albert. The Falcons allowed Van Meter just two first downs — one by penalty — and three completions on the night. The Bulldogs finished with just 149 yards of offense.
