LOGAN, Iowa — Players met for an 8 a.m. breakfast. Then they spent much of the afternoon playing pool.
No, it wasn’t a normal game day for Logan-Magnolia. But the Panthers ended the night with a familiar lopsided result on the football field.
The Class A No. 6 Panthers didn’t have school Monday. But they overcame the break in their routine and a slow first quarter to cruise past A-H-S-T 41-14 in the second round of the playoffs on a crisp evening at Uel F. “Bob” Evans Memorial Field
The sequel turned out just as good as the original for Logan-Magnolia, which beat the Vikings 49-3 in Logan 17 days ago in a District 8 meeting. Senior running back Caden McDonald rushed for 194 yards and scored three touchdowns on 16 carries, and senior Paul Hutson added 100 yards on the ground in the blowout.
“We knew we had to come out with a lot of energy,” McDonald said. “We took it to them. You definitely don’t want to lose it.”
The Panthers head to top-rated Woodward-Granger (10-0) for a quarterfinal tilt at 7 p.m. Friday.
Lo-Ma (10-1) got that far by outrushing the visitors 406-146 and outgaining them 426-232 overall Monday. Its lone complete pass came from quarterback Nick Knudsen to a wide-open Dillon Wills for a 20-yard touchdown to end the Panthers’ scoring on the first play of the fourth quarter.
In addition to defending a ferocious ground attack, A-H-S-T (7-4) also had to deal with losing freshman quarterback Nathan Herbst to a broken collarbone in the first quarter. Senior backup Tyler Robinson filled in admirably, going 7-for-16 passing for 86 yards and one interception. He also ran 15 times for 45 yards.
“The better team won today,” AH-S-T first-year coach Davis Pattee said. “We didn’t execute and make enough plays to do what we needed to get a victory.”
