Six western Iowa volleyball teams on Tuesday attempt to take the final step and reach the state tournament, which is set for Nov. 7 to 10 at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
The lone WI hopeful in Class 3-A is No. 9 Red Oak (26-6), which will meet unrated ADM (25-10) in the Region 3 final at Atlantic. Red Oak is seeking its 11th state appearance, all in the past 18 years.
In Class 4-A, one western Iowa qualifier is assured at Mapleton, where No. 2 Sioux City Heelan (34-10) will face No. 11 Council Bluffs Lewis Central (21-13) in the Region 1 final. Heelan is seeking its 15th straight state appearance and 19th overall. Lewis Central’s lone appearance came in 2003.
Also in 4-A, No. 3 Harlan (31-5) will meet unrated Dallas Center-Grimes (9-16) in the Region 2 final at Stuart. Harlan is looking for its fifth state trip, all in the past nine years. DC-G lost 14 of 16 during one stretch this season.
In Class 5-A, unrated Sioux City North (22-23) will face No. 10 Urbandale (30-8) for the Region 1 title at Fort Dodge. North is seeking its ninth state appearance, but has made it only once in the past 25 years.
And in the 5-A, Region 2 final at Des Moines Christian in Urbandale, unrated Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln (31-16) will try to knock off No. 1 Ankeny (28-6). A.L. is seeking its third straight trip to Cedar Rapids and 12th overall. Ankeny is seeking its fifth state championship in nine years.
All matches start at 7 p.m. Class 1-A and 2-A regional finals will be Wednesday.
Iowa volleyball expanded from four classes to five this season, meaning 40 teams will reach state instead of 32.
