HEBRON – The T-Wolves of Exeter-Milligan swept their way into the D1-2 Subdistrict final tonight at Hebron.
Monday it was E-M over Heartland in a 3-0 sweep by scores of 25-22, 25-20, 25-15.
Game one saw the Huskies go up 4-3 on a kill and an ace from Mikaelyn Dick and an Ashton Kroeker kill against a kill for E-M from Jennifer Pribyl. Dick scored on a push kill, Kroeker got a spike kill and when Haley Huebert served an ace Heartland was up 7-6. Malinda Hall answered for E-M, but Heartland stayed up a point on a hammering kill from Dick.
Still the T-Wolves worked their way into the lead at 11-9 on a kill by Megan Zwickl. One of Erica Yound’s team-high three aces tied it at 17-all and from there the Wolves went up three at 23-20 on a kill from Pribyl that went off the block and out of play.
Dick got a kill on the first set point to hold off E-M for at least one rally, but a shot deep into the Heartland side by Pribyl found the floor and ended the opening set.
Set two saw E-M race to a lead of 8-zip behind three kills from Jackie Luzum, who topped the T-Wolf attack chart with 15, wrapped around a Zwickl ace.
The Huskies scrapped gamely back to lead 12-11 with the help of three Sara Brune kills, a tip kill by Ashley Bittinger and one from Kroeker. E-M went up 15-12 again on a Hall kill and successive service aces from Kylie Briske.
Heartland promptly ran off three in a row to forge another tie at 15-15 and force E-M coach Darcy White to call timeout and gather her troops.
Luzum found the coffin corner for a kill out of the timeout, 16-15, and the T-Wolves went on a run to lead 24-17. Brune kept her team alive with a set-point kill, 24-18, E-M hit long to make it 24-19 and an ace by Dick brought Heartland within four, 24-20.
Luzum ended it with a kill on the next rally and the teams moved on to set three.
The Huskies led that one, too, at 7-6 off a Kroeker kill, but soon it was 10-7 E-M on the way to a T-Wolf lead of 18-10 behind a Luzum kill that ricocheted off the Heartland block and caromed into the cheap seats.
When a stab save by E-M made it across the net and somehow fell among the Heartland players it felt like a done deal at 21-14.
Yet another Luzum kill and back-to-back ace serves from Taylor Erdkamp brought game three to 24-14. Set and match ended when Heartland was called for a double-hit infraction.
The tale of the tape for the T-Wolves included 35 assists for setter Erdkamp. Jennifer Pribyl, Hall and Zwickl added seven, seven and five kills in support of Luzum’s 15. Jennifer Pribyl had four blocks with Amber Pribyl at three.
Zwickl matched Yound’s three aces with Erdkamp and Briske at two each. Yound led in digs with six. Luzum, Briske, Erdkamp, Hall and Zwickl were credited with 5, 4, 4, 3 and 2 digs.
For Heartland it was four aces for Dick to go with eight kills. She shared team-high kill honors with Brune. Kroeker added five to go with two blocks. Brune had 1.5 blocks in the match.
Setters Ashley Quiring and Maelyn Huebert had 10 and eight assists.
The loss ended Heartland’s season at 17-10. E-M improved to 25-4 and advanced to the subdistrict final against BDS which swept Friend in the other D1-2 semifinal.
