KENESAW -- The Kenesaw Blue Devils couldn’t catch Ryan or Tyler Dahlgren.
The Bertrand Vikings couldn’t tackle Tyler Schnitzler.
Eventually, Schnitzler couldn’t keep up.
Scoring the last 36 points of the game -- three touchdowns on plays of third and double-digit long -- seventh-ranked Bertrand upset fifth-ranked Kenesaw 82-45 in the Class D2 playoffs Wednesday night at Kenesaw.
“I couldn’t imagine that defensively we would get torn apart like we did tonight. But they’re very good and very athletic,” Kenesaw coach Craig Schnitzler said.
The two teams combined for nearly 1,100 yards of total offense while scoring 18 touchdowns and a field goal.
For Bertrand (10-0), Ryan Dahlgren rushed for 313 yards on 16 carries and scored five rushing touchdowns. He had another 93 yards and a touchdown on the receiving end of Nick High passes.
Tyler Dahlgren rushed for 93 yards and three touchdowns and caught three passes for 90 yards and two more touchdowns.
High passed for 250 yards and four touchdowns.
“We have some weapons, too, so we were able to hit some passes and take advantage of some of their man coverage with some of our speed,” Bertrand coach Brent Streeter said.
The teams traded touchdowns throughout the first half with Bertrand scoring last to take a 39-31 lead. The Vikings needed only two plays in the second half to extend their lead as Ryan Dahlgren sprinted 61 yards for a touchdown.
But Kenesaw (8-2) fought back.
Tyler Schnitzler, who rushed for 213 yards on 22 carries, ripped off a 42 yard run down the Kenesaw sidelines to bring the Blue Devils within a point, 46-45, midway through the third quarter.
“Offensively we did enough to have ourselves in the game,” Craig Schnitzler said. “Then, third and 25 and he throws a touchdown pass over the top. What can you say?”
The Vikings’ next three touchdowns included a 71-yard pass to Ryan Dahl-gren on third and 16, a 40-yard touchdown pass to Robert Edgren on third and 23 and a 33-yard pass to Tyler Dahlgren on third and 20.
“We had some third downs and long that our kids executed. We didn’t want to go to the same thing twice, but we had enough things our kids could execute that they hit them,” Streeter said.
And doing it through the air was something the Vikings had figured out earlier in the week.
“When we first saw who they were coving man-to-man … we knew we had more speed in the spread and bunch sets. If they were going to stay in man, we were going to expose something,” Streeter said.
The Blue Devils’ cause took a blow late in the first quarter when Preston Schnitzler went to the sidelines with a shoulder injury. Tyler Schnitzler was already throwing up from a bout with the flu. Both are among Kenesaw’s better coverage players.
“We just don’t have the coverage guys and when Preston went down, that was huge,” Craig Schnitzler said.
