CHAPPELL — Sutherland is going back to the State Volleyball Tournament.
The Lady Sailors dominated Potter-Dix 25-11, 25-11 and 25-10 to win the Class D1 District-6 Final at Creek Valley High School in Chappell on Thursday night.
“It was a strong effort on our part,” said Sutherland head coach Valerie Kershner. “We were aggressive and we served the ball well and were aggressive with our serves.”
For Sutherland, it’s the third straight trip to the State Volleyball Tournament.
“We weren’t nervous at all, we were very calm and focused,” Kershner said of her team. “It helps that we’ve been in this position before and the girls were very focused on this match and not worrying about what came after it.”
Potter-Dix did give the Lady Sailors some trouble, according to Kershner.
“They were a scrappy team,” the coach said.
Kershner said the Lady Sailors have talked not only of a return to the state tournament, but playing three matches while there.
“We don’t want to just get to the state tournament,” the coach said. “We’ve talked all season about our major goal, which is to get there and play three matches.
“I’ve been impressed all season with their focus on the task at hand, and now they can focus on that major goal to win the first day and play three matches at state, not just one and done.”
Joli Hopping had 25 set assists, nine digs and three kills and Sam Kennedy recorded 17 kills, two blocks and nine digs to lead the Lady Sailors on Thursday. Jaylne Schuster added 12 kills and 15 digs; Kelsey Dillenburg had five kills, five digs and one block; Haley Baxter had three kills and five ace serves; Kristen Nelson provided one kill, three ace serves and six digs; and Haley Stokey had four digs in the match.
