MANNING, Iowa — Emmetsburg committed eight motion penalties Friday with its fast-paced offense for not being set for a full second.
The E-Hawks (11-1) made up for that by rushing for 419 yards and outgaining IKM-Manning 489-140 in a 55-7 rout of the Wolves (11-1) in the Class 1-A quarterfinals at Floyd Forman Field.
Andrew Wellik ran for 284 of those yards on 21 carries and had five touchdowns to lead Emmetsburg, which will play Council Bluffs St. Albert in the semifinals Nov. 10 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.
The Falcons, who defeated Mount Ayr 28-0 Friday, took down the E-Hawks 24-6 in last season’s Class 1-A semifinals.
“Andrew did a nice job, and I thought our backs and line did a very nice job,” Emmetsburg coach Mark Dunlap said. “We practice and play at that speed, and that is just part of what we do.”
IKM-Manning co-head coach Tom Casey said he knew his team could not make mistakes because of the way the E-Hawks had capitalized on their opponents’ errors during the season.
“We could not get adjusted to their formations and the quickness that they run it at,” Casey said. “Our JV kids did a great job of simulating it, but it is hard to get it at game speed. And they are definitely the best team that we have played this season with their physicality and quickness.”
Wellik, who has rushed for 2,654 yards unofficially on the season, busted a 56-yard gain on the first play from scrimmage and scored three times in the first 13 minutes. IKM-Manning got on the board with a 63-yard run by Sam Wegner to make it 21-7, and appeared to be getting back into the game when it forced a three-and-out on the ensuing possession.
But Devontay Massey-Hocken fumbled the punt and the E-Hawks recovered it 34 yards from the end zone. Wellik ran it in on the next play and also scored from 56 yards out later in the half as Emmetsburg took a 49-7 lead into halftime.
“That was critical because it looked like we were starting to get our feet under us,” Casey said. “We gave them a short field and they scored right away, and I don’t know how big of a difference that it would have made. But it didn’t help matters.”
