Omaha metro area products Darin Ruf and Tyler Cloyd and the Omaha Storm Chasers’ Wil Myers have all been named the player of the year in their respective minor leagues by Topps.
Ruf, the former Omaha Westside and Creighton star, tied a professional record by hitting 20 homers in a month (August) and led all minor leaguers with 38 homers for Reading of the Class AA Eastern League – for whom he also had 104 RBIs while hitting .317. Ruf, 26, finished the season in the majors with Philadelphia, hitting .333 with three homers and 10 RBIs in 12 games.
Cloyd, from Bellevue East and UNO, went a combined 15-1 with a 2.26 ERA at the minor-league level, including 12-1 with a 2.35 ERA for Class AAA Lehigh Valley to earn International League player of the year. Cloyd, 25, also finished the season in the majors with the Phillies, going 2-2 with a 4.91 ERA in six starts.
Myers, 21, was second only to Ruf while hitting 37 homers at the minor-league level, where he also hit .314 and drove in 109 runs. With Class AAA Omaha, Myers hit.304 with 24 homers and 79 RBIs in 99 games to earn Pacific Coast League player of the year.
