JOHNSTON, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa National Guard said its last Vietnam War veteran has left its ranks.
Col. Ronald Albrecht retired Sunday at a ceremony at Camp Dodge in Johnston.
Albrecht, 58, had served in the nation's military for a total of 36 years.
He enlisted in the Navy soon after graduating from Waverly-Shell Rock High School in 1971. While in the Navy, he was deployed for a year supporting the U.S. mission in what was then South Vietnam.
He left the service in 1978, went to college and eventually became a teacher.
Albrecht joined the Iowa Army National Guard in 1983 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1984.
He will continue working for the National Guard as a civilian contractor with Northrop Grumman.
