GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — No. 1 Hastings St. Cecilia controlled much of the match against Thayer Central in a Class C-2 first-round state tournament game Thursday at Grand Island Northwest High School.
There was just one point early in the third set when the Hawkettes were a little out of sync.
“We had a streak at the start of game three where we made some mistakes,” St. Cecilia coach Alan VanCura said. “I called a timeout, the kids came out and chopped into the lead and got back into it.”
The Hawkettes put things back together in that third set to sweep the Titans 25-12, 25-19, 25-19 to advance to an 11 a.m. semifinal Friday at Grand Island Senior High.
St. Cecilia (30-3) used a balanced attack to hold off the Titans (22-8). Arika Kitten had 11 kills, Olivia Thomas nine, Jose Prevette nine and Morgan Nikkila eight.
“One thing that has been a real key for us is we have gotten to the point where we have almost every rotation pretty strong now,” Van Cura said. “At the beginning of the season, we had a couple of rotations we were a little bit weak on. We've gotten stronger, especially with the emergence of Josie Prevette. Over the last week and a half, she's played her best ball of the year.”
Thayer Central coach Kurk Wiedel said the match was all about serve and serve receive, two spots in which his team has been strong all year.
“But they served us off the court,” he said. “The other thing is we did not serve well, so any time we would get momentum going it would be stopped by a missed serve or serve receiving error.”
Bridgette Baden led Thayer Central with 20 kills.
