Patrick Bloomingdale is in line for a raise of more than $50,000 after he takes over as Douglas County's next chief administrative officer in less than three months.
At Tuesday's meeting, the Douglas County Board is expected to promote Bloomingdale to replace Kathleen Kelley as chief administrative officer. Kelley, who turns 66 next month, will retire Feb. 1.
Bloomingdale, 43, has served as the deputy county administrator for the past 10 years under Kelley. He joined Douglas County in 1993 as a civil attorney in the County Attorney's Office.
The county has recommended that Bloomingdale's current salary increase from about $87,000 to $138,000 effective Feb. 2. His pay would climb again to $142,500 after three months in his new job.
In October, Bloomingdale told county officials he preferred a salary of about $142,000 if he took the job. Kelley currently makes about $147,500 after 15 years in the position.
Two Douglas County Board members said Friday they have no problem boosting Bloomingdale's salary to more than $140,000, given the duties of leading Nebraska's largest county government.
A recent salary study determined that the administrator's salary should fall within a range of $107,000 to $178,000.
“I think Patrick will do an outstanding job,” board member P.J. Morgan said. “To me, it seems like a reasonable salary, and I'm inclined to support it.”
Board member Clare Duda said he will vote for the proposed pay increase, considering the chief administrator oversees nearly 2,000 workers across county government.
“I know it sounds like a lot of money,” Duda said, “but I don't think that salary is out of line when you look at comparable chief administrative officers, and Patrick is better than most of his comparables.”
