Class C-2: Aquinas edges Eagles with late stop

DAVID CITY, Neb. — Norfolk Lutheran’s seasonlong quest to make it to the Class C-2 finals came up a few inches short.

Eagles quarterback Kenny Blank was stopped on a 2-point conversion try by David City Aquinas linebacker Landon Stouffer, who cut him under with the tackle, giving the defending state champion Monarchs a 42-41 victory in overtime Tuesday.

Aquinas, which beat Norfolk Lutheran 14-7 last year to qualify for the finals, will play Sutton for the championship next Tuesday at Memorial Stadium.

“We talked about it in the timeout,” Norfolk Lutheran coach Darin Suckstorf said of his decision to go for two. “They wanted to go for two, and I was all for it. I think it was the right call. I don’t think we’re second-guessing ourselves. It’s just tough to lose a game like that — on the last play in overtime.”

Blank had just pulled the Eagles within a point after scoring on fourth-and-1 in overtime.

Aquinas took a 42-35 lead on a 1-yard score by fullback Seth Hoffman.

The overtime period was almost anti-climatic after the frantic finish by Norfolk Lutheran to send the game into overtime.

The Eagles, facing fourth-and-16 from the Monarch 24, scored when Blank connected with wide receiver Shaka Taylor for a 24-yard touchdown pass with 3:40 left in regulation.

Blank hit Taylor again for the 2-point try that tied it at 35.

The Eagles (11-1) scored on a 1-yard run by Blank to pull them within 35-27 with 11:57 remaining in the game.

Aquinas had taken a 35-21 lead on a 17-yard touchdown run by Matt Jakub. Norfolk Lutheran cut the Monarchs lead to 27-21 on a 66-yard touchdown pass from Blank to Taylor.

Aquinas lead at halftime 27-14 on 42- and 38-yard field goals by Stouffer and a 48-yard run by him to make it 17-14 with 8:05 left in the first half. Quarterback Trev Semrad also hit Michael Byers for a 53-yard touchdown pass.

Hoffman scored early on a 1-yard run for Aquinas while the Eagles hit pay dirt on a 1-yard run by Blank and a 1-yard score by Arrin Rathke.

“That was a great game to win but a tough game to lose,” Aquinas coach Ron Mimick said. “We played great, but they played pretty well against us. Both teams played well enough to win.”
