It’s the time of year when bands stop touring so much, but don’t let that keep you from the rock clubs. Plenty of area bands — many just as good as their nationally touring friends — will play here just about every night.
The most important of these shows is Lash LaRue’s annual toy drive concert, on Saturday at The Waiting Room Lounge. Bring a $10 donation or an unwrapped toy of equal value to get you in the door to hear LaRue — real name Larry Dunn — and friends Secret Weapon, Cannonista and The Blacktop Ramblers play.
For Christmas, LaRue will drive the toys up to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, one of the poorest communities in the country, and give them to children. It’s a great cause and also will be a fun show.
Some other good concerts coming up:
CD release show for Skyman
Formed from bands Modus Vivendi and EchoBliss, Skyman will release a new album with Friday’s show. They play with Guilty Is the Bear and Island Alumni at 9 p.m. in Slowdown’s front room. Tickets are $7 at www.etix.com or Homer’s Music.
Ten Club (Pearl Jam tribute)
Tired of waiting, like I am, for Pearl Jam to come back to town? The next best thing is Ten Club, an excellent Pearl Jam tribute band. Plus, the band is playing The Waiting Room Lounge, a small room you’ll never see Pearl Jam play. The show is 9 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $7 at the door.
