BROOKINGS, S.D. — Summit League favorite South Dakota State broke the game open with an early 15-2 run, built a 31-point lead before settling for a 56-28 advantage at halftime, and cruised to a 78-63 win Saturday night over UNO.
The Jackrabbits (6-2 overall, 1-0 Summit) led 68-45 before being outscored 18-10 over the final 10:39. The Mavericks started that push with a 10-0 run to get within 13 points with 8:06 to go, but they could come no closer.
South Dakota State’s early scoring burst included two 3-pointers by Jordan Dykstra and another by Nate Wolters and took the lead from 10-7 to 25-9.
Dykstra led the Jackrabbits with 17 points, Tony Fiegen added 16 points and nine rebounds, and Wolters and Brayden Carlson each scored 13. South Dakota State shot 56.1 percent from the field in the first half and 47.8 percent for the game.
John Karhoff made 7 of 9 from the field and led UNO with 16 points, while Justin Simmons and CJ Carter each scored 10. Matt Hagerbaumer was strong off the bench again, with five points, a career-high 11 rebounds, and two blocked shots.
UNO (2-7, 0-2) shot 48.1 percent from the field but had 22 turnovers. The Jackrabbits turned 13 first-half UNO turnovers into 23 points.
The Mavs played without forward Koang Doluony, who didn’t make the road trip to attend to personal matters. Carter, slowed by a back injury, played 23 minutes.
