MULLEN — St. Pat’s traveled to Mullen on Saturday and came away with the championship of the Bronco Invitational wrestling tournament.
The Irish, with four individual champions, won the tournament with 155 points. Sutherland was second with 113, followed by Bridgeport with 110, Bayard with 105.5, Stapleton-McPherson County with 91, Sandhills/Thedford with 65, Anselmo-Merna with 57, Mullen with 54, Ansley-Litchfield with 52, South Loup with 49.5, North Central with 39.5, Hyannis with 31.5 and Creek Valley not scoring.
Individual champions for St. Pat’s were Trey Dodson at 106 pounds, Nathan Chrisman at 113 pounds, Adam Pasquinelly at 132 pounds and Bryan Shurigar at 285 pounds.
“We had a good day,” said St. Pat’s coach Kevin Wood. “Trey did a good job in the final and had a good day.
“Chris beat Dalton Zimmerman of Mullen, a guy who has been a problem for us. I was really pleased with that win.”
Shurigar has just one loss on the season. The 285-pounder broke his arm in the district final last season, but has returned for this season.
“Bryan is doing well,” he said. “He lost on Thursday to a kid from Dundy County-Stratton, but he’s done well.”
Other place winners for St. Pat’s included Cody Weaver at 106 pounds finishing third; Joel Melton, third at 170 pounds; Henry Aufdenkamp, second at 182; Pedro Martinez, third at 195; and Miguel Martinez, third at 220.
“Cody Weaver wrestled well,” Wood said. “He’s an under-sized 106 pounder.
“A big welcome to the varsity for Miguel Martinez, who finished third in a 16-member weight class. He wrestled well on the day.”
Sutherland came away with individual champions in two weight classes. Chandler Tyan won first at 126 pounds and Nathaniel Foster took first at 195 pounds.
Also placing for the Sailors were Collin Fleecs, third at 120; Colt Corbin, second at 132; Greg McKain, second at 145; and Zach Blake, fourth at 170 pounds.
Jake Wells of Anselmo-Merna captured the title in the 160-pound weight class, while Levi Peterson of SMC earned the title at 220 pounds.
