If you’re a teenage girl, the most awesome band in the world is One Direction.
And if you’re 16-year-old Ashley Campbell of Omaha, you just had the most awesome week. Ever.
Last week, Ashley got a curious phone call. On the line was a representative from Sharpie pens, who told her she had won a contest. The prize? An all-expenses-paid trip with friends to New York to see One Direction, her favorite band.
“They had a blast. They were just speechless,” said Tina Campbell, Ashley’s mom. “The treatment that we got was red carpet treatment.”
Ashley, a junior at Roncalli High School, entered the contest on Facebook to see the British boy band, which sings songs such as “What Makes You Beautiful.” When she won, Ashley talked to her parents and immediately called her friends.
“At first, some of them didn’t believe me. They were like so excited for me. Screaming,” Ashley said. “Then I surprised them and was like, ‘Well, you know I’m gonna take you.’”
Ashley got to take seven friends, as well as two chaperones, her parents. Ashley and four of the girls took two days off from school to make the trip.
The trip included a private jet flight to and from New York, front row seats at the concert and a VIP area where they had a party.
A photographer from Sharpie followed them around during the flight and at the Madison Square Garden concert, which made the girls feel like celebrities.
Ashley first heard of One Direction about a year ago. Her passion for the band quickly intensified.
“I became obsessed in January,” she said.
“I can attest to that,” added her mom, with a laugh.
The pop group with a super-sweet sound was on the show “X Factor” and has soared in popularity since its formation in 2010. The band has broken sales records, and singles “What Makes You Beautiful” and “Live While We’re Young” are international top-tier hits.
During the trip, Tina took Ashley and her friends to the 1D World store in New York and they visited the set of “Good Morning America,” where the girls got on camera.
“The concert was great,” Mom said. “They had a wonderful experience. It was pretty amazing.”
