GILLETTE, Wyo. — The Scottsbluff boys basketball team continued its strong start to the season Friday, taking down Rock Springs 60-53 in the second day of the Gillette Tournament.
The Class B No. 1-rated Bearcats (Omaha World-Herald) outscored Rock Springs in every quarter except the third period. Scottsbluff led 19-14 at the end of the first quarter before stretching its advantage to 33-25 at halftime.
Rock Springs outscored Scottsbluff 15-12 in the third stanza, but the Bearcats stayed in front down the stretch.
Taylor Winkler had a superb performance for Scottsbluff, scoring a game-high 25 points. He was 7 of 13 from the field and 8 of 13 from the free-throw line. Also for the Bearcats, Michael Hadden had 11 points, Eric Moreno had nine points and three steals, and Austin Clarkson had seven points and 12 rebounds. Tyler Mickey had six rebounds.
As a team, Scottsbluff shot 38.6 percent from the field (17 of 44) compared to 29 percent (18 of 62) for Rock Springs. Scottsbluff had 39 rebounds compared to 43 for Rock Springs, and Scottsbluff had 14 turnovers compared to 11 for Rock Springs.
Scottsbluff was 19 of 31 from the free-throw line, while Rock Springs was 15 of 20.
The Bearcats (5-0) will be back in action today against Casper Kelly Walsh in the Gillette Tournament.
