NEW YORK — It was a split decision for Nebraska at the inaugural Grapple at the Garden.
The 14th-ranked Huskers defeated Rutgers 22-10 before No. 18 Maryland rallied to edge NU 18-17 in Sunday’s duals at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
It was the first time the Garden hosted a collegiate wrestling event. The event featured 14 teams and drew 9,034.
The four highest-ranked teams — No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Ohio State, No. 5 Iowa and No. 7 Missouri — all went 2-0.
Maryland heavyweight Carl Buchholz edged Nebraska’s Donny Longendyke in overtime to give the Terrapins the one-point victory. Maryland, which had lost to Ohio State 34-3, won the last three matches against the Huskers, erasing a 17-9 deficit.
Nebraska got two wins each from Ridge Kiley at 141 pounds and Robert Kokesh at 174. One of the wins for Kokesh, who is ranked eighth nationally, was a 6-2 decision against 10th-ranked Greg Zannetti of Rutgers.
Nebraska also got a pair of wins from its 165-pound wrestlers. Austin Wilson, who has started at the weight class most of the season, decisioned Rutgers’ Nick Visicaro. Tyler Koehn then dropped from 174 pounds and earned a 13-2 major decision over Maryland’s TJ Guidice.
Another newcomer in the lineup, 157-pounder Brandon Wilbourn, split his matches. Wilbourn, who is filling in for an injured James Green, got his win over 13th-ranked Scott Winston of Rutgers by major decision.
Nebraska senior Josh Ihnen suffered his second loss of the season when he was decisioned in extra time by 10th-ranked Jimmy Sheptock of Maryland. Ihnen scored an early takedown in the first period before Sheptock responded with two second-period takedowns to tie the match 4-4.
Late in a scoreless third period, Sheptock completed a shot on Ihnen’s legs at the edge of the mat and threw Ihnen down seconds before the period expired. Sheptock improved to 6-1 this season against ranked opponents.
Nebraska dropped to 6-3 in duals.
Iowa was dominant in its two duals, blanking Hofstra 42-0 before downing Bucknell 34-9. The Hawkeyes won 18 of their 20 matches.
Iowa got pins from Derek St. John, Mike Evans, Ethen Lofthouse and Bobby Telford to improve to 9-0 in duals.
“We did some good things when we put ourselves in good positions,” Hawkeye coach Tom Brands said. “Most guys wrestled well and put themselves in good positions.”
Iowa competes in another dual on the road Monday, facing Buffalo at 6 p.m. Nebraska’s next meet is the Dec. 29 Midlands Invitational in Evanston, Ill.
