LINCOLN — Pierce Almond helped the Grand Island Senior High boys basketball team get over the hump.
The Islander sophomore calmly sinked three straight free throws with 2 seconds left to help Grand Island grab its first win of the season in a 51-49 win over Lincoln High Saturday at the Heartland Athletic Conference Tournament.
With Lincoln High leading 49-48, Almond, who led the Islanders with 19 points, got fouled on a 3-point attempt.
“He was really calm when he went to the free-throw line,” GISH coach Jeff Hofeldt said. “Those were big free throws for us.”
Grand Island built an early seven-point lead in the third-quarter, only to see the Links fight back to take the lead.
“The kids just battled. Lincoln High battled back from a seven-point deficit and come back and takes the lead on us,” Hofeldt said. “I’m proud of the kids for hanging around and I thought the bench played outstanding. I thought we put together another complete game, even though we lost to Lincoln Southeast the day before.”
