Grand Island stood up to a tough Omaha Burke push early in the medal rounds, again finishing strong in a meeting of the state’s top two wrestling teams.
The top-ranked Islanders and No. 2 Bulldogs each crowned four champions, splitting their four finals meetings, but Grand Island still had enough to win Saturday’s Tom Dineen Invitational at Omaha Creighton Prep with 222.5 points to Burke’s 209.
Four-time defending Class A champion Grand Island also beat the Bulldogs in a dual two weeks ago.
Much like that one, Burke had a good push early — this time in the championship round. Freshman Otis Rollins got the Bulldogs going with a fall for the title at 106. Teammate Aaron Fletcher followed with a third-period pin for the 113-pound crown.
Top-ranked Jacob Wilcoxen beat Grand Island’s Matt Bolan in the championship match at 126. The Islanders flipped Bolan — ranked first at 132 — and Trey Trujillo — No. 3 at 126. Trujillo had beaten Wilcoxen in the earlier dual.
“To be honest, we’ve got three pretty good 126-pounders,” Grand Island coach Mike Schadwinkel said when asked about the switch. “Dante (Rodriguez) is big for 120, and Bolan and Trey are both pretty tough. This may be what we go with. We’re still kind of juggling things.”
Rodriguez and Trujillo won titles at 120 and 132, respectively. Those two, along with teammate Andrew Rojas (138), equaled Burke’s early run. Second-ranked Rojas beat No. 3 Jared Green of Burke.
Jordan Hammond at 145 won the Bulldogs’ other title.
Burke coach Wes Boehm said the mandatory five-day holiday break had an obvious effect. At the most, teams had two days of practice before the tournament.
“We’re where we need to be right now,” Boehm said. “Now we’ve just got to get back to work and get back into shape.”
The rankings at 152 figure to get jumbled. Top-ranked Justice Bridgeford of Burke was pinned in the third period by Grand Island’s Billy Thompson, No. 4 in the class. Thompson then lost to No. 3 Antoine Tureaud of Ralston in the final.
The Islanders got their last title at 195, where Chase Reis won by injury default against Burke’s James Simpson. The Bulldog wrestler was taken by ambulance to a hospital with a possible broken ankle. The match was stopped after his foot was twisted in the wrong direction.
Grand Island was wrestling in its second individual tournament of the season, but the first since Dec. 1.
“I wasn’t really pleased overall,” Schadwinkel said. “Overall, as a team, it didn’t feel like a great day of wrestling.”
Joe Remaklus of Lincoln Northeast topped Lincoln High’s Evan Vicroy 5-3 in overtime in a showdown of the Nos. 3 and 2 wrestlers, respectively, at 160.
Creighton Prep teammates Trey Graves and Jake Anderson won back-to-back titles. Graves beat fourth-ranked Joe Contreras of Burke in overtime at 170. Second-ranked Anderson pinned Grand Island’s Haris Talundzic at 182.
Top-ranked wrestlers won the other two titles. Lincoln High’s DJ Castillo beat No. 3 Edgar Silva of Grand Island at 220. Harrison Phillips (Millard West) pinned Juan Medina (Grand Island) in the 285 final.
