Denny Chapman’s Christmas tree, stripped of its lights, ornaments and other decorations, was tossed onto a pile of other discarded trees Saturday in a Tranquility Park parking lot.
The park at 120th Street and West Maple Road is one of 12 drop-off sites for free Christmas tree recycling. Sites are open daily through Jan. 15.
This Christmas marked the first in nearly a decade that Chapman had a live tree.
“It was a good tree,” Chapman said. “It didn’t shed much, even when we took it down yesterday.”
About a dozen volunteers from the Rotary Club of Omaha and the Douglas-Sarpy Master Gardeners were on site to help unload trees.
Companies will bid on the discarded trees, and then the trees will be ground up and used as mulch, said Frank Walter of the Master Gardeners.
Walter said stores drop off dozens of trees that didn’t sell.
For the most part, people are pretty good about removing decorations from the trees, said John Sullivan of the Rotary Club of Omaha.
“We get the occasional tinsel tree, but they’re great about undecorating them to recycle,” Sullivan said.
Volunteers expected drop-offs to pick up during the day.
“It looks like we’re going to be very busy,” Sullivan said.
