Notes: Huskers add Florida defensive tackle

Nebraska picked up a recruit for an area of need on Friday.

Kevin Maurice, a 6-foot-3, 270-pound defensive tackle from Orlando, committed to the Huskers.

He posted a message on Twitter Friday confirming his acceptance of a scholarship offer to Nebraska for the 2013 recruiting class.

“Commited to Nebraska #BigRed,” Maurice tweeted.

Several media outlets also reported the commitment.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Maurice committed a day after NU extended the scholarship.

NU defensive coordinator John Papuchis also visited the defensive tackle on Friday.

“It's crazy,” Maurice told the Sentinel. “It was unexpected.”

Maurice joins Orlando wide receiver Dominic Walker, who committed to Nebraska earlier in the recruiting period, to become the second 2013 commit from Florida.

According to the Sentinel, Maurice plans on taking an official visit to Nebraska on Jan. 11 and has canceled trips to Wake Forest and Boston College.

Maurice becomes the 20th member of the class of 2013 for NU, but is the only defensive tackle.

Papuchis “said he doesn't know how I slipped through the cracks,” Maurice told the Sentinel. “They felt like they found a diamond in the rough with me. They think I'll fit in their system. They're not looking for big guys that'll fill holes, they need someone who has juice.”
