GREELEY, Colo. — The Scottsbluff/Gering girls swimming and diving team returned to the pool for the first time in 2013 at the extremely tough Greeley West Invitational on Saturday in Greeley, Colo.
The Seacats were one of 15 teams in the competitive field.
Up against many of the top squads in Colorado, Scottsbluff/Gering managed to post a 10th-place finish with a score of 126 points. Cherry Creek won the team title with 366 and Fossil Ridge placed second with 339.
“This is always a tough meet swimming against some of the top teams from the state of Colorado,” Scottsbluff/Gering coach Mike Hayhurst said. “This is a tough time of the year to be swimming because we’re coming off a break. Then having to swim in a very competitive meet like this is a big challenge for the kids. For the most part, I was pretty happy with the results.”
Cierra Weatherfield posted the Seacats’ highest individual finish by placing fifth in the 500 freestyle. Weatherfield ended the distance event in a time of 6 minutes, 1.78 seconds.
Weatherfield also placed 11th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:15.82.
Vanessa Woolsey swam to a sixth-place finish in the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:07.61. Also in the event for the Seacats, Erin Weatherman finished 15th in 1:12.11.
Hayhurst lauded the effort of Anna Yanke. Just a freshman, Yanke dropped time in both of her events, including finishing 14th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:20.92.
“Anna Yanke had a great day,” Hayhurst said. “She dropped a ton of time in both of her events. Those were huge drops during a time of the year when it’s hard to get time drops like that. I was really happy with her swims today. She was probably our most outstanding swimmer of the meet. A lot of the new kids had good times.”
Also in the 100 breaststroke for the Seacats, freshman Sarah Cloud finished 10th in a time of 1:20.15.
In other individual events for Scottsbluff/Gering, McKayla Stark finished 16th in the 100 freestyle in a time of 1:02.35, Woolsey was 12th in the 200 freestyle in 2:15.93, and Erin Weatherman was 13th in the 100 butterfly in 1:11.47.
The Seacats also made strong showings in all three relays.
The team of Woolsey, Cloud, Weatherman, and Jessie Sorenson finished eighth in the 200-medley relay in a time of 2:06.86.
In the 200-freestyle relay, the Seacats’ Stark, Woolsey, Cloud, and Sorenson ended 10th in 1:54.62.
The team of Stark, Weatherman, Weatherfield, and Yanke placed 10th in the 400-freestyle relay in 4:18.44.
Hayhurst was pleased with his squad’s focus through the entire course Saturday’s meet.
“This is a really long meet,” Hayhurst said. “It’s good for us to compete here so they can work on staying focused over a longer period. That’s what it’s going to be like at the [Omaha] Westside meet, the conference meet, and at state. It’s important that they learn to stay focused for a whole day.”
After just coming off a break, the Seacat girls will face another two-week layoff from competition before hosting the Twin City Invitational Jan. 18-19.
The Scottsbluff/Gering boys will return to action on Saturday at the Cheyenne South Invitational.
