A showdown of top 10 wrestling teams turned into a nail-biter Saturday, with Class A No. 3 Millard South getting a win in the final match to break a tie and give the Patriots a 33-30 victory over No. 6 Lincoln Southwest in the finals of the Millard West Invitational.
Each team went unbeaten in pool play, then they were tied in the championship dual through the first 11 matches.
Timothy Burbach swung the momentum to the Silver Hawks with his third-period pin at 170. It would be short-lived, however, as Anthony Cloyd of Millard South promptly tied things again with a pin 18 seconds into the 182-pound match.
“He’s such a competitor,” Patriots coach Doug Denson said of Cloyd. “We told him he’d need to get a pin and he went out and did it.”
Cloyd’s effort set up a winner-take-all match at 195, which Terry Jeub of Millard South won 6-3 to give the Patriots the tournament crown.
“I think this was a good measuring stick to see if we’re going to be in the hunt, in the top five or so,” Denson said. “I’m really happy with their effort. The kids came to wrestle, they fought hard.”
There was a bit of a shakeup in Denson’s lineup, one he said paid off. Millard South moved Isaac DeLoa up to 120. The top-ranked 113-pounder ground out a 4-2 overtime victory over Southwest’s Keegan Williams, ranked sixth at 120.
That gave the Patriots a 17-6 lead before Southwest reeled off the next 18 points with a pair of decisions, a major decision and two pins.
Millard South forged the first tie with a victory at 160 to set up the three-match shootout.
“The cool thing is that more people are getting tuned in with dual strategies and strategies during it,” Denson said. “We’re studying all day long and shifting the lineup. It worked today.”
