ASHLAND – York ran away from the field at the Ashland-Greenwood Invite, placing 11 wrestlers in the finals.
By the time the semifinals wrapped up, the Dukes had clinched their third consecutive invite win, with the second place Louisville Lions almost 100 points back. The final score was 223 to 125.
Third place went to Maple Valley out of Anthon, Iowa, and fourth was picked up by the hosts with 110 points.
Eight teams participated in the invite.
“Our kids did a great job at the tournament. We had a week full of illness, injury and other distractions that could have made this tournament very difficult for us to perform well but the kids responded well. To put 11 wrestlers in the finals is something that doesn't happen very often and we put the tournament away with that performance in the semifinals,” commented York head coach Chad Mattox.
“I was really impressed with Hayden Robb who was seeded last in his bracket but ended up winning the tournament. Hayden has wrestled incredibly well over the past three competitions and is becoming one of our best wrestlers.
“Parker Johnson had a great day also defeating two quality wrestlers en route to a first place finish. I was also really pleased with Nick Tonniges and his first place finish. Nick has come a long ways in our program - he wrestled some varsity as a freshman but hasn't broken into our lineup until recently. His story is a good one.” said the coach, adding, “More kids need to persevere and stick it out like him. Tonniges never quit or gave up on himself and now he is a starter on a quality wrestling team as a senior. A lot of kids would have given up but Tonniges is a great example of hard work and dedication and how it pays off in the end,” said Mattox.
“This team has accomplished quite a bit so far - three tournament titles, a runner-up and a third place finish at tourneys so far. We have a chance to really accomplish something this year but it's up to the wrestlers to see how far they want to go.”
York is back in action on Saturday as they look to defend their 2012 team title at the Cross County invite.
