Valley Notes: Bradley already finding success

Players of the week

Overall: Northern Iowa forward Seth Tuttle. The sophomore from Sheffield, Iowa, averaged 21.5 points and 8.5 rebounds while shooting 74 percent from the field in the Panthers' 1-1 week.

Newcomer: Wichita State forward Cleanthony Early. The junior from Middleton, N.Y., averaged 17.5 points in two wins last week.

Brave new world

With 10 wins, Bradley already has exceeded last season's victory total by three.

Coach Geno Ford likes the way his players have handled a taste of success but is eager to see how they handle the grind of league play.

“The Valley can be brutal on you,” Ford said. “You lose a hard-fought game, and it's all about how you respond next time out.

“The good thing is that our guys are not getting caught up in the big picture. Instead, they're focusing on what we need to do today in practice or in games to get better.”

Quote of the week

Southern Illinois coach Barry Hinson, on his team's offensive shortcomings: “We're going to the O.K. Corral without a lot of bullets in our gun.”

Bits and pieces

Evansville's Colt Ryan needs five points to become the 26th player in league history to score 1,800 points. Creighton forward Doug McDermott will become the 27th later this month.

Wichita State will take a 15-game homecourt winning streak into Wednesday's game against Southern Illinois. The streak is tied for 11th-best nationally.

Bradley center Will Egolf has returned to practice but remains suspended following a New Year's Eve arrest for possession of a controlled substance. Egolf has missed the past two games and will not play Wednesday against Indiana State. Coach Geno Ford said Egolf's status is still being reviewed.

Illinois State's Jackie Carmichael has set a school record for blocked shots with 161. He has 29 this season.

Forward Dantiel Daniels is sidelined indefinitely with an ankle injury, leaving Southern Illinois with just one player taller than 6-foot-5. In spite of the size disadvantage, the Salukis have a plus-1.5 rebounding margin this season.
