CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Up against one of the top teams in the state of Wyoming, the Gering girls basketball team dropped an 80-39 setback to Cheyenne East on Thursday night in Cheyenne, Wyo.
East, which improved to 11-1 with the win, is rated No. 2 in Wyoming’s highest 4A Class.
“Cheyenne East is obviously one of the best teams in the state of Wyoming,” Gering coach Adam Freeburg said. “They have athletes all over the floor and you can tell they’ve played a lot of basketball together.”
The loss evened Gering’s record at 7-7 on the season.
Alexa Anderson ignited for 10 points to lead the Bulldogs in scoring. She nailed a pair of 3-pointers.
Also for Gering in the game, Megan Upp tallied eight points and Santanna Mitchell added seven.
Gering had one of its best performances of the season at the free-throw line in the contest. The Bulldogs sank 23 of their 32 charity-stripe opportunities.
Despite the setback, Freeburg lauded his squad for battling strongly throughout the entire four quarters.
“We have continued to battle and fight all season,” Freeburg said. “That’s a big credit to this group of seniors and to all of the girls. That’s one of the things I’m most proud of.”
Gering will return to action next Friday at home against Chadron.
