CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A big third quarter lifted the Cheyenne Central girls basketball team to a 54-38 win over Scottsbluff on Monday night in Cheyenne, Wyo.
Despite the final result, the Bearcats put up quite a fight against the Indians, who are in Wyoming’s highest class. Scottsbluff trailed by just one point at halftime before Cheyenne Central took charge by outscoring the Bearcats 21-5 in the pivotal third quarter.
“The girls did a good job,” Scottsbluff coach Mike Burda said. “Cheyenne Central has a big team with two solid posts, who we struggled with. But overall I thought the girls did a good job. They fought hard and competed. That was important.”
In a tightly contested opening half, Burda credited the play of the Bearcat defense for keeping things close. Cheyenne Central led 10-9 after the first quarter before both teams put up 11 points each in the second eight minutes.
“It was kind of a scrappy game,” Burda said. “We contested a lot of shots and rebounded the ball fairly well in the first half. In the second half it was a different story. They started hitting more shots and they were getting second, third, and fourth attempts.”
After the tough third quarter, the Bearcats managed to outscore the Indians 13-12 in the final frame.
Scottsbluff received a balanced effort offensively in the contest. Zoe Holscher led the Bearcats in scoring with nine points. Holscher’s scoring came on three 3-pointers.
Lauren Miller finished with eight points and a pair of 3-pointers, while Chesney Walker had seven points. Also for the Bearcats, Liz Cunningham and Toni Rosado each totaled six points.
The Bearcats shot 10 of 19 at the free-throw line.
The setback dropped Scottsbluff to 1-11 on the season, while Cheyenne Central improved to 7-2.
Burda credited his squad for continuing to compete strongly against tough competition.
“We’ve played a pretty tough schedule. I think we’ve competed very well,” Burda said. “I know we only have one win on the season, but I feel we have shown a lot of improvement throughout the season so far. Hopefully, we end up peaking at the right time.”
Scottsbluff will return to action on Saturday afternoon when the Bearcats host Sidney. The Red Raiders are rated No. 8 in Class B this week by the Omaha World-Herald.
“It seems like we always compete pretty well with Sidney,” Burda said. “The girls are looking forward to playing someone in our conference and district.”
