SIDNEY — The Scottsbluff boys basketball team came up big in the fourth quarter Saturday night en route to rallying for a 54-50 win over Sidney.
The Red Raiders led for most of the game, but the Bearcats outscored Sidney 18-12 in the final 8 minutes to pull out the win and lift their season record to 13-3.
Eric Moreno and Taylor Winkler both hit free throws in the final minute to help Scottsbluff prevail. Winkler capped Scottsbluff's scoring when he nailed two free throws with 7 seconds to play.
“It was a very good win,” Scottsbluff coach Tony Siske said. “When it comes to district competition, games are going to be like this – they're going to be a battle. You just want to get out of there with a win.”
Siske said he was especially proud of his players for maintaining their composure after Sidney spurted ahead 13-7 at the end of the first quarter.
“They kind of jumped on us, and we haven't played from behind very well lately. We kind of get into a hurry-up mode,” Siske said. “But this time, we stayed on course the whole game. We just kept chipping away and kept chipping away. Finally, we had a chance to take the lead, and we did it.”
Moreno had a huge game for Scottsbluff, piling up 26 points and 10 rebounds. Michael Hadden also came up big, tallying 14 points and 11 rebounds. Matt Klein had seven points and four steals.
Sidney's leading scorer was Casey Mabey with 17 points. Lane Harvey added nine points. Six other Red Raiders reached the scoring column.
Scottsbluff, which trailed at halftime 26-23, finished the game 16 of 25 from the free-throw line. Sidney, which dropped to 11-6 on the season, was 4 of 10 from the charity stripe.
