YORK - The Duke girls got their 10th win right when they needed it Tuesday at home.
After a conference tournament that didn't go according to plan, Coach Matt Kern's troupe got back on track with a 50-40 win over a Central City team that played better than it's 10-10 record would have one believe.
Aleah Rosenau, a Duke senior, opened game scoring with a 2-pointer and the Dukes were off and running, especially after back-to-back treys from Veronica Botts and Hannah Riley. York was up 8-2 at 5:30 of the first period.
By the 2:20 mark, however, the Bison had drawn even at 8-all. A layup by Riley with a steal she pilfered herself came in the final 30 ticks and made it 11-8 after one.
Riley paced the Dukes with 21 points to which fellow junior Erin Malleck added 13. Botts had eight and Rosenau six.
The Bison got a three to draw even early in the second, 11-11, then went up 14-11 on a traditional three-point play by 6-foot Central City sophomore Jill Gathje.
The Dukes struck back on a bucket by Malleck with the assist to Riley, then a 2-pointer each from Botts and Malleck, who netted a three at 4:05 until halftime that had York up 20-16. A Riley three made it a 23-18 game and another from No. 10 in the final 30 seconds put the Dukes ahead 29-23.
Riley drove the paint for two in the final 10 seconds to make it a 31-25 game at halftime.
A trey each by Botts and Riley to close out scoring in the third had the board reading 43-30 Dukes as the final eight minutes began.
The Bison rallied gamely in the fourth, but were done in by 5-8 shooting at the free throw line down the stretch from Riley.
Val Fausek led the Central City with 13 points on five field goals, two from behind the arc, and 1-2 at the stripe. Gathje hit five twos and 1-2 at the line.
Riley's points came on four 3-pointers, a two and those five clutch free throws in the fourth period to hold the Bison at bay.
Kern said his team knew Central City "plays hard. We knew it would be a tough one. I liked the way the girls kept control" of the game, he said.
The Bison threw a zone at the Dukes, but Kern said the girls adjusted after some initial struggles.
"I liked the girls in the second half," he said of how the Dukes kept their intensity. "We've had some bad second halves," he said, but Tuesday night wasn't one of them.
The Dukes visit Lakeview in Columbus on Saturday. Central City host Raymond Central that evening.
