NU, Iowa want Heroes Game kept on Friday

LINCOLN — Nebraska and Iowa are taking the necessary steps to continue the Huskers’ tradition of playing on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

According to NU, Huskers Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst and Hawkeyes Athletic Director Gary Barta will make a request to the Big Ten for at least the 2013 and ’14 games to be played the day after Thanksgiving. They have played their first two games as Big Ten rivals in that slot.

Overall, Nebraska has played on the Friday after Thanksgiving every season since 1990.

“Playing on the day after Thanksgiving is one of the many great traditions of Nebraska football,” Eichorst said in a release. “It gives our football program great visibility on a national stage, and we are excited Iowa has a mutual interest in continuing to play the Heroes Game on this day.”

The Nebraska-Iowa request will be considered when the Administrators Council of the Big Ten meets on Feb. 25 and 26.

If approved, the Huskers and Hawkeyes would meet in Lincoln on Nov. 29 next season and in Iowa City on Nov. 28 in 2014. NU has won its first two games with Iowa since joining the Big Ten.

Nebraska holds an 18-5 record in its last 23 games on the Friday after Thanksgiving. It played Oklahoma from 1990 to ’95 (5-1) and Colorado from 1996 to 2010 (11-4) before its two wins over Iowa.
