LINCOLN — Nebraska’s paying just as much attention to the offensive line in its 2013 recruiting class as it is to the much-maligned defensive line.
The Huskers picked up a fifth offensive line commit in Fresno City (Calif.) Community College’s Chongo Kondolo on Thursday night. And by Saturday, they hope to add a sixth in Houston Bellaire offensive tackle Dwayne Johnson, who’s narrowed his list to NU and Arkansas.
First, Kondolo: The 6-foot-4, 290-pounder confirmed initially to Husker Online that he committed to Nebraska over Tennessee. Kondolo and Fresno City coach Tony Caviglia did not return phone calls from The World-Herald.
A three-star prospect according to 247Sports, Rivals and Scout, Kondolo told Husker Online that Nebraska plans for him to play center or guard, and NU sent four coaches to Fresno this week to woo him from the Volunteers, who appeared to have the edge earlier in the week.
Kondolo took official visits to Illinois, BYU and Utah State and rejected offers from Oklahoma and Florida State. The Huskers won a similar battle against the Sooners and Seminoles two weeks ago when College of Dupage (Ill.) offensive tackle Matt Finnin committed to Nebraska. Finnin recently turned down an offer from Ohio State, as well.
Next, the Huskers tried to add one more piece to the offensive line puzzle Friday night during an in-home visit with Johnson, a 6-6, 275-pounder who visited NU Jan. 18, then followed that with a visit to Arkansas Jan. 25. The Razorbacks made their pitch for Johnson on Thursday night. Johnson had also taken visits to Purdue and Washington State.
Kondolo’s commit gave Nebraska 24 verbal pledges for the class. The Huskers have 25 open scholarships and can, by Big Ten rule, go three over that limit with 28 signees. Although a source has told The World-Herald that running back Braylon Heard is transferring from the program, he remains on scholarship and the roster.
The Huskers have three more prospects taking official visits this weekend: West Mesquite (Texas) defensive end and Missouri commit Dimarya Mixon; Harvey (La.) wide receiver and Louisiana-Lafayette commit Devin Scott; and Gaithersburg (Md.) wide receiver Jacquille Veii. Veii will be choosing from among Nebraska, Iowa and Maryland. Zachary (La.) wide receiver and Houston commit Donald Gage had planned on an official visit, but Scout reported that he changed his mind at his hometown airport.
Signing Day is Wednesday.
