LA CRUCES, N.M. — The Nebraska softball team opened the 2013 season with midseason-like batting performances on the opening day of the Hotel Encanto Invitational.
The Huskers won a pair of games Friday, 14-6 over Illinois-Chicago and 5-1 over New Mexico State, combing for 31 hits in 12 innings.
In the opener, Nebraska used a seven-run sixth inning to earn a season-opening run-rule victory over Illinois-Chicago.
Leading by just two entering the final inning, the Huskers dismantled the Flames’ pitching in the sixth. They recorded eight consecutive hits in the inning, including six straight that tallied runs.
All Nebraska players with an at bat recorded a hit as the Huskers finished the game with 16 overall.
Junior Kylee Muir recorded the first extra-base hits of her career with two doubles and freshman Hailey Decker debuted with a home run in her first collegiate at bat. Another freshman, Emily Lockman, picked up the win on the mound.
Nebraska’s 14 runs tied a school record for runs in a season opener. The Huskers also scored 14 in their season opener of the 1993 season against Creighton.
The Huskers face Illinois-Chicago again Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Tatum Edwards provided most of the fireworks later in the day against New Mexico State.
The junior out of Murrieta, Calif., pitched a complete game and launched two home runs. She struck out three and allowed just four hits to the Aggies.
New Mexico State did try to mount a comeback down 3-0 with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning. Malena Padilla hit a solo home run off of Edwards to make it 3-1.
Edwards got the run back with her second homer of the game in the top of the sixth.
For the game, Nebraska managed another 15 hits, including five for extra bases.
Decker again succeeded at the plate, knocking three hits, two of which were doubles. Fellow freshman Kiki Stokes also delivered three hits for Nebraska.
