INDIANAPOLIS — UNO erased a 17-point halftime deficit and rallied for an 85-78 win Saturday at IUPUI.
The Mavericks made up their deficit in the first 10 minutes of the second half with the help of a 15-0 run that helped them close within 55-53.
UNO took its first lead since the opening minutes at 59-57 on a 3-pointer by Alex Welhouse, and took the lead for good at 61-60 on a basket by John Karhoff.
Karhoff, a 6-foot-8 junior from Omaha Creighton Prep, scored a career-best 26 points while adding five rebounds and five assists. Welhouse, a 6-7 senior, had his second career double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. He hit 6 of 11 from the field.
The Mavs eventually pushed the lead to nine points in the closing seconds and completed a season sweep of the last-place Jaguars.
UNO improved to 9-18 overall, but is 6-8 for fifth place in the Summit League. The Mavs have gone 5-3 in league games since a 1-5 start.
IUPUI dropped to 6-20 overall and 1-11 in the Summit.
Justin Simmons added 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists for UNO, while sophomore guard CJ Carter had 16 points and four assists.
IUPUI was led by 23 points apiece from Sean Esposito and Mitchell Patton. Esposito hit seven of IUPUI’s 12 3s, and Patton had seven rebounds. Greg Rice had 16 points, and Donovan Gibbs added 12.
UNO shot 53.2 percent (33 of 62) from the field, which marked the Mavericks’ eighth .500-plus shooting effort in the last 11 games.
The Mavericks also outrebounded IUPUI 40-26, which marked a season-best effort on the glass.
The first half was all IUPUI, as the Jaguars knocked down 10 3s, including 6 of 6 by Esposito, who had 20 points in the first 20 minutes. IUPUI led by as many as 22, at 49-27, and led 51-34 at halftime.
