SIDNEY, Neb. — For the second time in three years, the Scottsbluff wrestling team won the championship of the Class B, District 4 Tournament on Saturday in Sidney.
The Bearcats rolled up 177.5 points to edge Lexington, who finished second with 173. Alliance placed third with 163.5.
Scottsbluff qualified seven wrestlers for next week’s state tournament in Omaha. Five of those ended as district champions.
Entering the final day of action in third place, Scottsbluff needed a pin in the final match of the tournament to win the title. Andrew Aratani came through with that win at 285 pounds.
“It came down to the last match of the day,” Scottsbluff coach James Miller said. “We never really were on top, and nobody had really cinched the number one spot all day long. It was a great day. It pretty much came down to the heavyweight. We pulled Andrew Aratani aside today and told him that if he wins, it’s a done deal and they can’t catch us. He ended up taking down [Mitchell] Collicot from McCook and pinning him in the first period.”
In addition to Aratani, Scottsbluff other district champions were Cruz Delacruz at 106, Keegan Hessler at 113, Colton Adams at 132, and Sabian Harsh at 145. Joseph Flores-Ybarra earned runner-up to Alliance’s Devin Ushio at 120. The Bearcats’ other state qualifier is sophomore Tristan Donelson, who earned a fourth-place finish at 152.
Although Miller was pleased with Scottsbluff’s seven qualifiers, he praised entire team for its effort through the entire weekend, noting that some of the guys who didn’t qualify picked up key wins that added to the point total.
“It was a team effort. Even the guys that didn’t qualify contributed to the district title today,” Miller said. “That was great for the team to realize that, bond together, pull together, cheer for one another, and get that support from one another.”
A number of other local wrestlers excelled in the tournament.
Alliance received individual titles from Ushio at 120 and Tyson Dowler at 152. Three other Bulldogs placed second. They were Walker Johnson at 126, Tyler Smith at 138, and Dawson Johnson at 160. Kyson Schnell wrestled back to place third at 195, while Manny Cabello (145) and Fernando Lopez (182) each placed fourth to secure state berths.
Chadron finished fourth in the team standings and will be sending seven to state. Winning district titles for the Cardinals were Colby Riesen at 160 and Chance Bila at 170. Finishing second for the Cardinals were Tate Cullers at 145 and Cooper Cogdill at 182. Willy Cogdill placed third at 152, while Daniel Goings at 106 and Trace Strotheide at 126 finished fourth.
