Edwards sisters push NU to 5-0

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The Nebraska softball team finished up a successful stint in New Mexico on Sunday with the Edwards sisters providing the highlights.

The Huskers defeated New Mexico 11-0 in five innings to finish the Hotel Encanto Invitational 5-0. That start matches their best start to a season since 2003.

Taylor Edwards finished 3-for-3 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and five RBIs. Her twin sister, Tatum, picked up her fourth win of the season, allowing only two hits to the Lobos. She threw four innings before freshman Danica Bishop made her Nebraska debut with a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth inning.

Brooke Thomason had a productive game as well, collecting two doubles and four RBIs. Kiki Stokes and Gabby Banda each scored three runs for the Huskers.

New Mexico fell to 0-6 as pitcher Lauren Soles lost the second game of her season. She surrendered seven runs in just three innings of work.

Nebraska had three runs by the time its fourth batter came to the plate in the first inning. Two Lobo errors allowed the first two Husker batters to reach before Taylor Edwards launched a changeup from Soles over the left field fence.

In the top of the third, Nebraska again benefitted from a New Mexico miscue. Banda scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded to give the Huskers a 4-0 lead.

The fourth inning was Nebraska’s most productive one as five Huskers scored. Jordan Bettiol and Alicia Armstrong were walked home before Thomason sent a 1-2 pitch into the outfield to score three runners to make it 9-0.

In the fifth inning, Stokes scored the 10th run on a Taylor Edwards double and freshman pinch runner Emily Lockman scored the final run on Thomason’s second straight double.

Bishop closed out the game by retiring all three batters in the bottom of the fifth to preserve the shutout and the undefeated start to the Nebraska season.

The Huskers next take the field Friday at the Hillenbrand Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. They are set to face Southern Utah at 10 a.m. and Arizona of the Pac-12 at 5 p.m.
