IOWA CITY — Second-ranked Iowa won the final five matches of Sunday’s Big Ten dual with No. 13 Nebraska as the Hawkeyes pulled away for a 31-7 victory in front of 9,514 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Iowa finishes the Big Ten dual season 8-0 to clinch the league title for the fifth time in the six seasons. In the past three weekends, Iowa has defeated No. 3 Minnesota, No. 1 Penn State, No. 8 Illinois and No. 13 Nebraska in succession.
The Huskers opened the dual with an 8-0 major decision by 11th-ranked Jake Sueflohn at 149 pounds, and were within 11-7 at intermission after eighth-ranked Josh Ihnen — an Iowa native — earned a 5-1 sudden victory over Grant Gambrall.
But the Hawkeyes then won three decisions, got a pin and a technical fall in the last five matches.
Iowa also won both matches that pitted ranked wrestlers against one another.
At 157, Nebraska’s James Green, who is ranked sixth, jumped to an early lead with a pair of first-period takedowns of top-ranked Derek St. John. But St. John evened the match in the second period and never let Green get to his feet in the third period to earn a 6-4 win.
At 174, second-ranked Robert Kokesh of Nebraska had his 22-match winning streak snapped as fourth-ranked Mike Evans rallied for a 9-6 victory.
Kokesh opened the second period with a reversal to take a 3-0 lead, but Evans escaped and got two takedowns in the final 1:07 of the period to grab a 5-4 advantage. Evans then opened the third period with another escape and takedown for an 8-4 lead and went on for the win from there.
Kokesh’s only other loss this season came in November to top-ranked Logan Storley of Minnesota. Two of Kokesh’s seven losses last season were to Evans.
Two Hawkeyes remained unbeaten on the season with their wins — St. John and Tony Ramos, who improved to 19-0 at 133 pounds as he pinned Shawn Nagel. Also, 125-pounder Matt McDonough, who had his 42-match winning streak snapped Friday against Illinois, bounced back with a technical fall win over Eric Coufal.
Both teams return to action next weekend.
Iowa will host No. 16 Edinboro on Saturday while Nebraska competes in the NWCA National Duals on Sunday.
