WILMINGTON, N.C. — The University of Nebraska at Omaha captured the UNCW Beach Blast title by beating Detroit 5-2 Sunday to earn something the Mavericks haven’t had since 2002 — a 5-0 start.
Amber Lutmer, a junior out of Millard West, hit the go-ahead, three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning. Dana Elsasser improved to 3-0 while Campbell Ditto also homered, her second of the season.
During its opening weekend, UNO has 12 home runs in five games after hitting 18 all last season.
After Ditto’s solo shot in the first gave the Mavs an early lead, Detroit (1-4) rallied with an RBI triple and a sacrifice fly for a 2-1 advantage in the fifth. That set the stage for the Mavs’ rally in the bottom of the inning.
Tara Trede hit a one-out triple, and with two outs Lindsay Redding tied the game on an RBI single. Ditto then singled to put runners at the corners before Lutmer hit her fourth homer of the season.
Elsasser retired the Titans in order in the sixth and seventh innings to cap her second complete game of the year. The junior from Hershey allowed two earned runs on three hits while striking out five and walking one.
UNO returns to Omaha before heading to Denton, Texas, next weekend for the North Texas Lovelace Invitational. The Mavs face Dayton twice, North Texas, Oklahoma State and Iowa once at the three-day tournament beginning Friday.
