CENTRAL CITY — With just less than three minutes to play in the third quarter of the Class D1-4 first round game at Central City Middle School, High Plains, a team that lost to Cross County 64-16 a little over a week ago, pulled within eight points.
However the Storm would be their worst own enemy as turnovers, three late in the third quarter, led to the Cougars closing the quarter on a 5-0 run. Cross County went on to a 51-34 win to advance to tonight’s game with No. 1 seed Fullerton.
The Storm fought hard in the fourth quarter, but the Cougars pulled away to move their season record to 13-10, while High Plains bows out of the 2012-13 season at 2-18.
High Plains had a chance to be within four to five points in the first half, but hitting just 6-12 free throws and turning the ball over 15 times in the first half hurt their cause.
The Storm could not stop Cougar Brooke Anderson who tossed in a game high 22 points, 19 in the first half and hit four treys in the win. Also strong in scoring for the CC girls was Michelle Klein with 14, three 3-point goals.
CC led 15-6 at the end of the first quarter and 27-13 at the break.
The Storm was led in scoring by Danielle Shenk with nine, Rachel Beck and Megan Fitzgerald added six and Morgan VanHousen put up five.
CC was 15-44 from the field and that included 8-19 from behind the 3-point arc and 13-17 at the charity stripe. The Cougars threw the ball away 20 times, seven in the final quarter.
HP ended the game 12-30, as turnovers and missed free attempts had them attempting only 10 first half shots. From the arc the Storm was 3-7 and 7-21 at the free throw line.
Cross County defeated the Fullerton Warriors in January 48-39 at home.
The Storm had four seniors play their final high school basketball game Monday night, as Fitzgerald, VanHousen, Shelbi Dittmer and Emily Kuhn will all graduate in May.
