Hola! My name is Joey, and I'm a 19-year-old Latino from South Omaha. I'm a member of a Latino youth group called SaludableOmaha, which promotes healthy choices and active lifestyles in our community.
This is the first of many blogs to come, and I hope you'll join me as I explore and work toward making my community healthier.
During the summer of 2010, I worked with a group of healthy behavior experts and friends to create a movement (SaludableOmaha) specifically designed to combat obesity and diabetes in South Omaha. During this process, I made changes in my own life and witnessed my friends do the same.
My best friend Danny started cycling to and from work, and now I try to eat right and exercise at least a couple of times a week. Sometimes I manage this, sometimes I don't. But the important thing is that I'm on the right track.
Eating healthy changed my life, which is why I think it's so important that my community focuses on eating right and staying active, too – together.
For the next month, I'll look at diabetes and obesity. I'll share my personal story about Type 2 diabetes and how it affected my family. As I share my health challenges and solutions, I want this to be a message of hope and empowerment – because so much of feeling unwell or overweight can be easily avoided.
I want to understand the facts, look at how to find support and care for these illnesses, and listen to others in South O. who are working to make healthy changes themselves – most importantly, how to make those choices the easy and cheap ones.
In my blog, I'll look at how Latinos can apply healthy living methods to our daily lives. Because by learning how to make small changes, we can better care for our community in positive and active ways.
Take a look at the video below to get a taste of what we started and are trying to do. Our South Omaha community loves life locally, and health starts here! Click here for more information about SaludableOmaha.
