Salt 88 opening in west Omaha this spring

Salt 88, a new modern Italian restaurant in west Omaha, is slated to open in May.

Owners John Horvatinovich and Milton Yin, who also owns and runs Hiro 88, have partnered to open the restaurant, which will focus on the cuisine of Mediterranean countries such as Croatia and Italy.

TCBY open in Ralston

A new location of TCBY Yogurt is open at 5170 S. 72nd St. in Ralston. The shop will have a grand-opening celebration Feb. 23 that will include door prizes and free 3-ounce frozen yogurts all day.

Wine dinner at Lot 2

Lot 2 and Matt Stamp, an Omaha native and master sommelier, are working together on a wine dinner. The four-course meal will feature eight wines that Stamp selected and will focus on one old-world and one new-world wine for each course.

The dinner takes place on March 23 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and is $100 per person before tax or tip. Reservations are required and seating is limited. To get a spot, call 402-504-4200.

Teens create, compete

Next weekend, a group of aspiring high school chefs will show off their culinary skills at the eighth annual Metropolitan Community College Institute for the Culinary Arts High School Culinary Invitational.

More than 100 students compete in the event, which is open to the public. Teams will compete by preparing three-course meals, testing their knowledge in a quiz bowl and coming up with restaurant concepts. A new event this year will be the teacher/student market basket competition, which challenges teams to create dishes from a grab bag of ingredients.

Students from Beatrice, Bellevue East, Bellevue West, Fremont, Gross, Louisville, Milford, Millard Horizon, Missouri Valley, Omaha Bryan, Omaha Career Center, Omaha Northwest, Papillion-La Vista, Papillion-La Vista South, Plattsmouth and Roncalli will participate.

The event is free and takes place Feb. 22 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Feb. 23 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Scholarships, gift certificates, medals and a trophy will be presented during the awards program.
