Huskers split, suffer first loss of season

TUCSON, Ariz. — An unearned run and a pair of failed scoring chances doomed the Nebraska softball team in a 1-0 loss to 16th-ranked Arizona on Friday afternoon at the Hillenbrand Invitational.

Nebraska junior right-hander Tatum Edwards, who fell to 4-1, did not allow an earned run, throwing a complete-game five-hitter. The Wildcats (4-2) reached base on an error in the bottom of the fourth inning. Arizona’s Hallie Wilson then doubled off the top of the wall in center to score the runner, Chelsea Suitos.

Nebraska (6-1) had chances to score. It had runners at second and third with one out in the top of the third but failed to score. In the top of the sixth, the Huskers didn’t score despite runners on first and third with one out.

Earlier in the day, Nebraska scored five runs in the first inning en route to a 7-0 victory over Southern Utah.

The win moved Nebraska to 6-0, its first such start to a season since 2003.

In the circle, freshman right-hander Emily Lockman tossed her first career shutout and Nebraska’s second straight. Lockman (1-0) tossed a four-hitter and retired 19 of the game’s final 21 batters.

NU freshman Hailey Decker added a two-run homer, and Kiki Stokes finished 3 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored.

Nebraska returns to action at the Hillenbrand Invitational with a pair of games on Saturday. The Huskers face Utah State at 10 a.m. followed by Drake at 2 p.m.
