TUCSON, Ariz. — A pair of standout pitching performances Saturday at the Hillenbrand Invitational helped the Nebraska softball team improve to 8-1.
In just her fourth career start, NU freshman hander Emily Lockman tossed a six-inning no-hitter in a 9-0 win over Utah State. Tatum Edwards followed with a four-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over Drake.
Lockman struck out eight while facing the minimum 18 batters, walking a pair of batters who were erased on double plays. Brooke Thomason added a grand slam for the Huskers.
Lockman’s no-hitter was the first by an NU freshman since 2008.
Against Drake, Edwards struck out seven and drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI double in the fourth inning. Thomason added an RBI single in the fifth inning.
The Huskers have thrown shutouts in four of their last five games and have not allowed and earned run in their last 3713 innings.
NU closes play at the tournament with a nonconference game against Purdue at noon Sunday.
