Storm altering district schedules

Some girls basketball district tournament directors are playing a new game — “Beat the Snow” — with an eye on the forecasts for heavy snow later this week.

Finals in at least four Class A districts and semifinals in at least four Class B districts have been moved from Thursday to Wednesday.

As for this week’s state swimming and diving championships, the Nebraska School Activities Association on Monday was planning no changes to the schedule.

Kevin Broderick of Bellevue West was the first on Monday to act, moving the District A-1 girls final to Wednesday. In Class A, the top seven teams in the state point standings are district hosts.

His counterparts at Bellevue East (A-3) and Millard North (A-5) followed suit with their districts. Lincoln Northeast (A-4) and Lincoln Southwest (A-6) made the change Tuesday.

In Class B, which had semifinals in all districts set for Thursday and finals on Friday, districts hosted by Lincoln high schools — B-1 at Lincoln East and B-4 at Lincoln North Star — have moved semifinals to Wednesday. Finals remain set for Friday night, with a snow date of Saturday.

That’s also the plan for B-2 at Omaha Northwest and B-3 at Fremont.

“Ideally, we would like to have (all) games in by Saturday,” said Jon Dolliver of the NSAA. “The schools and officials have been very good about working together so that we can get these played.”

For the state swim meet, the NSAA said it would monitor the local forecast.

“It is up to each school to determine whether or not to bring their teams to Lincoln early,” the NSAA said in an email to schools. “Please pay close attention to the weather forecast in your area as our primary goal is to keep everyone safe as they travel to Lincoln later this week.”
