The McCook girls basketball team outscored Alliance 34-21 in the second half and put three players in double figures in posting a 66-46 win in the semifinal round of the Class B, District 6 Tournament on Thursday night at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff.
The top seeded Bison improved to 20-4 with the win and advanced into today’s championship game against Gering at 7 p.m. McCook is the defending champion of the tournament.
The loss ended Alliance’s season at 11-12.
“It was a good win,” McCook coach Jeff Ellis said. “It wasn’t a real pretty basketball game for us and that’s kind of crazy when you look at the scoreboard. But our defense was a little bit inconsistent tonight. We didn’t play as disciplined as I challenged the girls to play.”
McCook didn’t get the upper hand until the 1:48 mark of the first period when Brooklyn Trew drilled a 3-pointer to break the tie and give the Bison a 14-11 advantage. The bucket sparked a seven-point run to give McCook an 18-14 lead going into the second frame.
Alliance’s Andri Halouska got the Bulldogs back into things after draining four straight free throws to tie the contest at 20-20. However, McCook regained its composure about midway through the quarter when Rachel Goltl hit a basket to spark an 8-1 run to send the Bison into the locker room with a 32-25 lead.
McCook shot out of the gate fast in the second half by going on an 8-3 run to extend its lead to 40-29 midway through the third.
The Bison finished strongly by scoring 20 points in the final eight minutes, including ending the game on a 10-0 run.
“In the second half we cleaned things up a little bit and allowed ourselves to get a nice cushion to secure the victory.” Ellis said. “Our main key and our main goal was to win and advance. We did that and that’s what we’re going to focus on.”
McCook finished the contest going 25 of 38 from the free-throw line. Alliance was 14 of 22.
The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Olivia Vogel, who tallied 19 points. Halouska collected eight, while Morgan Anthony added seven.
Trew paced the Bison with 17 points. She went 6 of 8 at the foul line and hit three 3-pointers. Goltl finished with 13 points and sank 5 of her 6 free throws. Brenleigh Daum chipped in 10 points for McCook.
