Cathedral City, Calif. — Nebraska junior right-hander Tatum Edwards took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but a two-run single from All-American Jessica Shults lifted top-ranked Oklahoma to a 2-0 win in the first day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Edwards (6-2) finished with a two-hitter and struck out a season-high eight. She worked around nine walks and a hit batter, before the two lone singles in the top of the seventh ended the Huskers’ three-game winning streak.
For the Sooners (15-0), reigning national player of the year Keilani Ricketts (5-0) tossed a three-hit shutout and struck out nine.
The two-run margin of victory tied for the Sooners’ closest game this season. Nebraska (9-2) outhit Oklahoma 3-2, losing for the first time this season when outhitting the opponent.
In the seventh, Briana Turang hit a high chopper back to Edwards, who had no play as Turang’s infield single broke up the no-hitter. A pair of walks then loaded the bases before Shults delivered her two-run single through the right side.
But Edwards got out of the jam with runners at first and third and no outs, using a fielder’s choice and a double play to prevent the Sooners from adding to their 2-0 lead.
The Huskers played Maryland late Friday night in the final game of the opening day.
NU continues tournament play Saturday against No. 9 Oregon. The Huskers face the Ducks at 7:30 p.m. Then they have a doubleheader Sunday — against No. 23 Florida State at 11 a.m. and No. 8 California at 1 p.m. — to conclude tourney play.
