Jays dominate Arkansas-Pine Bluff

CONWAY, Ark. — The Creighton softball team got itself back to .500 Saturday, dismantling Arkansas-Pine Bluff 16-2 in five innings at the Central Arkansas Tournament.

The Bluejays (4-4) got 13 hits on the day. Four of the 15 CU players to see action had multiple hits. Juniors Ellen Homan and Blair Lowe, senior Amy Baker and freshman Kelsey Allender each had two hits.

Baker and sophomore Bri Lingl each had a home run. Baker throttled her fifth home run of the season over the center field fence. It was the third consecutive game that the Omaha Westside product had a homer. The returning All-MVC catcher now has 46 career home runs. She is four shy of tying the Creighton all-time record and six short of the Missouri Valley Conference all-time mark. Lingl's homer vaulted over the left field fence.

Junior Alexis Cantu started on the mound and was able to even her record to 1-1. Cantu was also productive on the offensive side, scoring a run and collecting an RBI despite not getting a hit. She was pelted by Arkansas-Pine Bluff pitchers on three separate occasions. Senior Sammy Snygg came on in relief of Cantu in the fourth inning. Each pitcher gave up an earned run and stuck out three batters.

The second inning was the most productive for the Jays at the plate. Allender opened the second with a single and sophomore Liz Dike took first base with a walk. Homan got on to load the bases and Lowe delivered with a two-RBI single through the right side to put CU's lead at 3-0.

Baker and freshman Blake Ringle each picked up RBIs before Lingl pushed the lead to 9-0 with her home run.

Ringle and fellow freshman Katie Pascuzzi recorded their first career hits for the Jays.

Creighton faces Grambling State Sunday morning at 9 a.m. to conclude the Central Arkansas Tournament.
