ST. GEORGE, Utah — Creighton took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning but was unable to turn that into a victory at BYU on Saturday.
The Cougars won 14-5 to take the rubber game of the series. BYU (7-6) had 20 hits, including eight for extra bases, while holding the Bluejays (4-2) to six.
Two-out walks helped Creighton start fast. In the first inning, free passes to sophomore Jake Peter and junior Mike Gerber set up senior Alex Staehely and freshman Reagan Fowler. Staehely scored Peter with a double into right-center then Fowler followed with another double, scoring two runs.
The Cougars answered with a four-run second inning to take a 4-3 advantage. But CU tied it 4-4 in the top of the third.
Junior Federico Castagnini was the beneficiary after getting on base with a single, then getting into scoring position on a two-base throwing error. He scored on an RBI goundout by Peter.
BYU then took control in the fifth with seven runs. Jaycob Brugman highlighted the inning with a grand slam.
