WICHITA, Kan. — Wichita State extended its winning streak to three games and UNO’s season-opening losing streak to four games with a 5-3 victory over the Mavericks on Wednesday at Eck Stadium.
After falling behind 5-1, UNO put together a rally in the sixth inning, as Tyler Splichal drew a bases loaded walk to make it 5-2 with one out. But Splichal was picked off first base by reliever T.J. McGreevy, and both he and Alex Mortensen — who had been on third base — were tagged out in rundowns an inning-ending double play.
The Mavs added one run in the ninth on an RBI single to left from pinch-hitter Brett Miller, but Brandon Peterson retired the final two batters of the game to pick up his third save of the season.
Zach Beringer went five innings to pick up the victory in his first start of the season, striking out eight. Taylor Doggett went 3 for 4 with two runs to pace the Shockers at the plate.
Eight different Mavs had hits. Junior Kyler Brady pitched 2½ scoreless innings of relief, striking out two.
Wichita State (7-4) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning beginning with a sacrifice fly by Millard North product Casey Gillaspie. Erik Harbutz followed two batters later with an RBI single. Johnny Coy then scored with two outs on a wild pitch from Mav starter Cole Volkers (0-1).
UNO’s Connor Messinger answered with a two-out double down the right field line to score Splichal from second base to narrow the Shocker lead to 3-1.
The Shockers answered right back to extend the lead to 4-1 with Gillaspie picking up his second RBI of the game on a bases-loaded walk, and another run scored as Coy grounded into a double play.
UNO plays its home opener Friday in a 10 a.m. doubleheader with North Dakota at Omaha Westside High School. The teams play a single game Saturday at noon.
